What Should I Consider When Choosing a Gaming Monitor for My Kid?

I'm looking to buy a new gaming monitor for my oldest child as a Christmas gift. He's really into gaming but doesn't play competitively. He mostly plays with friends at night, specifically games like World of Warcraft, and he has an MSI gaming PC. I'm not very knowledgeable about gaming monitor specs and want to make sure I pick the right one without letting him choose it himself. What should I focus on when selecting a monitor for him?

First off, it’s great that you want to help your kid out! If you want solid advice, knowing what kind of GPU (video card) he has is crucial—it'll help figure out the best resolution. For gaming, look for at least 1080p (1920x1080) or 1440p (2560x1440), and definitely prioritize high refresh rates like 144Hz. An IPS panel is usually a popular choice too. If you can find out about his GPU and your budget, I’m sure you’ll get better suggestions!

No shame in asking! It’s all about making him happy.

If he’s not into competitive gaming, a 1080p monitor with 120-160Hz would be perfect. You might want to check if he likes smoother gameplay or better resolution—maybe ask him for a preference without revealing the surprise! Just remember, if his GPU model ends with '60', it might struggle at higher settings like 1440p. Getting the right one could be tricky, but you’re on the right track!

Knowing what he didn’t like about his current monitor could also help. Is it too small, not bright enough, or just not the right style for him? Aim for at least 120Hz and look for features like FreeSync. Even if he prefers to help pick out the monitor, you can still keep it a surprise and exchange it later if it’s not quite right.

That's a great point, I’ll definitely ask him about his preferences!
