What Should I Do After Getting Hit by a Trojan?

About a month ago, I accidentally downloaded an installer from a dangerous site called KaranPC while trying to get an MP3 tag editor. Normally, I'm cautious and always scan downloads with ESET Smart Security, but this time it didn't flag anything. After installing, I received alerts about several threats, including an HTTP filter, a Trojan file (Win32/GenKryptik.HIWI), and a botnet. ESET managed to block all these threats, but the installer wouldn't let me delete it until I restarted my computer.

The next day, I noticed hacking attempts on my accounts like Instagram, Facebook, PayPal, and others, but I managed to secure them quickly. I've already changed passwords, set up Google Authenticator, and ran multiple full system scans that came back clean. Now I'm curious if there's anything else I should do to ensure I'm safe or if ESET has completely cleaned everything. This experience has left me feeling a bit paranoid, and I'd really like some reassurance that I'm in the clear.

While ESET seems to have done a good job detecting the threats, if you're still feeling uneasy, consider running additional scans with a different antivirus program or malware removal tool. It never hurts to have a second opinion. Just make sure your security software is up to date!

I get how you feel! Reinstalling Windows might seem extreme, but it provides peace of mind. Just remember to back up your data first. You could also check your system's installed programs and uninstall anything that looks suspicious, just to be safe.

If you're really concerned, a full Windows reinstall via USB is the safest route after an infection. Just running scans isn't always enough, especially with serious threats like Trojans. It may seem like extra work, but it ensures that any hidden malware is completely wiped out. You definitely don't want to risk dealing with lingering issues down the road.
