What should I do after my coworker cut network cables?

So, I'm in a bit of a messy situation here. My coworker noticed a beeping noise from the server area, and instead of unplugging the associated Ethernet cable, she ended up cutting the wires instead. Now, our entire network is down, and I really don't know what to do because I'm just starting out in IT and I'm not familiar with where the punch down blocks go. Plus, our IT department isn't around much. I'm worried she might lose her job since she's new and we really can't afford to be down at the gas station overnight when customers need to be rung up. What steps should I take now?

Wow, the situation just escalated, huh? If she’s cutting more than one cable and panicking, that’s definitely a sign to call in the manager. It sounds like she's emotionally unstable around this, which isn't good. Assure her that it’s not the end of the world and it might help to handle the situation calmly instead of trying to fix it yourself, especially since you're not IT qualified.

It's great you reassured her! Hopefully everything goes smoothly when the manager arrives.

This mess might seem like a disaster, but calling your boss is the right move. This kind of mistake usually raises concerns about competency and could lead to serious consequences for her. Just make sure you’re clear about what happened and follow the procedures to avoid getting dragged into this mess yourself.

Good call sticking to the procedures! Better safe than sorry.

First things first, you should unplug the other end of the cables she cut. Keep track of where they go by marking them on a diagram. If you can, go out and buy replacements, but definitely don't let her leave the store while you fix this! Have her handle customer transactions manually until you get it sorted out. Oh, and make sure to take the cut cables with you for reference!

I’m honestly baffled as to why anyone would think cutting wires is a solution. If you need a quick fix and don't have replacements, try to trace the cut cable back and see if you can at least determine what was affected before your manager arrives. She might be in trouble, honestly, and you really need to cover yourself by reporting this ASAP.

Totally feel you! Cutting wires is a big red flag and just asking for trouble.
