What should I do with my SSD when upgrading from AM4 to AM5?

I'm planning to upgrade most of my PC components, but I want to keep my existing M.2 SSD. Before I transfer it to the new motherboard, are there any precautions I should take? It's the only storage device I have, and I'm unsure if I can just plug it into the new motherboard and expect everything to work smoothly.

A lot of people recommend doing a clean Windows install for better performance, but you might also just plug in the SSD and see if it works. Many people have done this with success!

Definitely back up everything you care about on the SSD before making the switch! Sometimes Windows won't boot after moving to a new motherboard. It's a good idea to have a Windows USB drive ready, just in case you need to repair the installation or reinstall Windows. Personally, I'd recommend doing a fresh install of Windows after backing up your important files. Once that's done, you can easily restore your stuff from the backup.

Just make sure to back up your important files and connect to the internet via ethernet when you boot it up for the first time. Windows 10 and 11 should automatically find the correct drivers if you're online. If you're using Linux, it usually handles hardware changes pretty well.

It’s likely that your SSD will boot without issues since operating systems have come a long way in terms of compatibility. I mean, switching from older to new platforms used to be a hassle, but now, using the same SSD across different hardware is much smoother.

If you use BitLocker, just make sure you have your recovery keys handy. Without them, your data could become inaccessible if you switch motherboards. Those keys are often saved to your Microsoft account.
