I've been teaching myself a few programming languages and enjoy solving logic puzzles on various learning platforms. However, I feel like creating simple games like hangman or rock-paper-scissors won't cut it when it comes to getting a job. What skills or projects should I tackle next to make myself a strong candidate in the software development industry?

You should really focus on building and scaling high-quality products that tackle real-world problems. Gaining experience with projects that have actual users will set you apart from many applicants. Think about applications that could be useful to people or even small businesses.
Have you considered going back to school for a degree in computer science or engineering? It's super competitive out there, and having a degree might give you an edge. But if that's not an option, really concentrating on translating the languages you've learned into functional apps or games could be beneficial.
I don't have a nearby college option. I really want practical experience more than a degree. How can I turn my language skills into real-world applications?
Do you have specific projects in mind that could help me get started?
