What should I know about page file size and how to set it in Windows?

I was looking at my laptop's specs and saw that the page file space is set to the default of 2GB. I have 32GB of physical RAM installed, with around 18.7GB available. Windows also lets you customize the page file size, asking for initial and maximum values. I've heard that for demanding tasks like running AI models or heavy gaming, the page file should ideally be 1.5 times your total RAM. Should I be changing these settings? What would be the best initial and maximum values for my setup?

Leave the page file management to Windows. Back when computers had 2-4GB of RAM, it was more common to tweak these settings, but now with 32GB, it's rarely used. You might hear some suggest turning it off, but I say keep it enabled and let Windows do its thing. Adjusting the size might not provide any real benefit and could just waste drive space.

Honestly, let Windows handle it automatically. It does a much better job of managing the page file than most users can. Just make sure your page file is stored on a fast drive, not an older HDD. In high RAM usage scenarios, like gaming while having a web browser and other apps open, Windows will effectively manage memory between RAM and the page file.

The page file acts as extra memory on your hard drive, which is slower than RAM but helps manage larger workloads. While it was more critical back in the day with less RAM, current systems often have plenty of memory. Still, don't overlook the page file completely; even modern applications can bloat and need that virtual memory. It might seem less relevant now, but it still serves a purpose.
