What Should I Look for in a Monitor as a New Coder?

Hey everyone! I'm new to coding and I'm looking to invest in a monitor that's great for programming. I've seen some monitors labeled as 'developer monitors' with features like low blue light, anti-glare coating, automatic brightness adjustments, and even special coding modes. I'm curious about which specs and features really matter when you're coding for long hours. What should I prioritize in terms of resolution, screen ratio, ergonomics, etc.? Also, if you have any favorite models that you've found to be helpful for programming, I'd love to hear about them! Thanks!

I always look for VESA mount compatibility. It's crucial for making ergonomic adjustments. Beyond that, a lot depends on your workspace setup. Just remember to take breaks to avoid eye and back strain!

Good point about VESA! Have you ever tried using a monitor vertically for coding? I've heard mixed opinions on that.

I love using a 5K monitor because it offers perfect scaling on my MacOS. Highly recommend checking this one out if you're considering high resolutions!

Thanks! I appreciate the recommendation!

Damn, it's out of stock. I'd be all over a 5K if I could find one!

Honestly, for me, all you really need is a monitor that turns on. Of course, it helps if it's a decent size and resolution—like a 27" with 1440p, which is kind of the sweet spot these days. Bigger monitors like 32"+ 4K can be great but also come with their own set of challenges.

Haha fair enough! Just wondering if you ever use features like a coding mode or specific aspect ratios. Do those actually help you when you code?

Totally agree! 27" 1440p seems to be the industry standard now, especially since 1080p just feels outdated.

I’m not convinced by some of the marketing. For example, blue light filtering sounds nice but can interfere with color coding in your IDE. The anti-glare is nice, but most monitors have that feature now. I think the best setup just requires a wide monitor and good refresh rate, since ultimately, the specific monitor specs don't matter much for coding work.

Thanks for your honesty! What specifically about the 'programming mode' makes you think it's just a buzzword?

For me, having a matte finish is a must—reduced glare is key for long coding sessions. Do you have any preferences for aspect ratio or resolution, or is matte and size your main focus?

Thanks for the insight! Matte makes total sense. I haven't really thought much about aspect ratios yet.
