I'm looking to upgrade my son's PC as a birthday gift. We bought a decent used machine for $320, which has the following specs: Intel Core i5-2500k processor, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB graphics card, a Gigabyte Z68MA-D2H-B3 motherboard, and 16GB of RAM (4x4GB 1600 MHz). It runs games like Minecraft and Fortnite okay, but I want to invest about $250 into an upgrade. After some research, I've found a couple of options: a Ryzen 5 CPU + motherboard + 16GB DDR4 RAM bundle for about $250, or an Intel Arc 8GB GPU for around $230. Which option would provide the best performance boost for his setup?

Honestly, for the price of the Ryzen bundle, it's a no-brainer. You'll get better performance with the new CPU and a modern motherboard. Down the line, you can replace the GPU once budget allows.
It might be worth checking out used parts too. You can often find good deals on slightly older graphics cards that would pair well with a new CPU upgrade. Just make sure the PSU is good enough for whatever you plan to install!
If you’re set on the Ryzen upgrade, just remember that you’ll need to factor in new RAM since Ryzen uses DDR4. But I think it's worth it! It'll give your son's PC a nice refresh, and then later you can look at GPU upgrades to really enhance gaming performance as well.
I’d focus on the CPU upgrade over the GPU right now. That motherboard uses DDR3 RAM, which won’t work with a Ryzen upgrade unless you budget for new RAM too, but modern CPUs can make a huge difference. Also, check if the PC has an SSD; upgrading from an HDD to an SSD would give an amazing performance boost.
I think you should definitely upgrade the CPU and motherboard first. The i5-2500k is getting pretty outdated compared to modern processors, whereas the GTX 1060 is still decent for now. Plus, a new CPU will give you more cores, which is helpful for gaming and multitasking. If you can swing a Ryzen 5 setup, that’d be a great choice!
Totally agree! A solid CPU upgrade can really extend the life of that PC. Remember to check if you have a compatible power supply and consider adding an SSD if you haven't done that yet. It’ll massively speed things up!

Good point about the SSD! That's a game changer if he’s still using an HDD.
