What should I upgrade first to improve boot times and gaming performance?

My Dell OptiPlex 7050 runs Windows 11 Pro with an Intel i7-7700 and 32 GB of RAM. Booting takes around 10–20 minutes, and the computer makes a rattling noise while the disk stays at 100% usage. Opening programs and windows is also very slow. During games, the disk is usually not heavily used, but the GPU reaches 100% usage and WolfQuest runs at only about 16–18 FPS on low settings. I used to get around 30 FPS, so performance has declined over time. What should I check or upgrade first, and what are the cheapest reliable ways to improve both startup speed and gaming performance?

Do some basic maintenance before spending money. Open the case, unplug the PC, remove dust with compressed air, and make sure every fan spins freely. The rattling could be a failing hard-drive mechanism or a worn fan, and overheating can reduce performance. Check CPU and GPU temperatures while gaming, then inspect Task Manager's disk column to see what is causing the activity. A clean Windows installation may help with software buildup, but it will not fix a failing drive.

For the cheapest sensible path, I would back up your data, replace the hard drive with a reasonably sized SATA SSD, and install or clone Windows onto it. That should dramatically improve booting and program loading. After that, test the game again; if FPS is still too low, investigate the GPU and the OptiPlex's power and size restrictions. Avoid buying parts until you have the exact storage drive, graphics card, case type, and power-supply details.

The first thing to identify is whether the computer is using a mechanical hard drive. A failing or very slow hard drive can explain the 100% disk usage, extremely long startup, and rattling sound. Replacing it with a SATA SSD would usually be the biggest improvement for general responsiveness. An NVMe drive is faster, but you would need to confirm that your specific OptiPlex motherboard and drive configuration support it. Before replacing anything, back up important files and check the drive's health.

Your 32 GB of RAM is already plenty, and the i7-7700 is probably not the main problem for WolfQuest if the GPU is staying at 100%. The graphics card is likely the upgrade that would improve FPS, but OptiPlex systems can have limits involving the case size, power supply, available power connectors, and cooling. Find the exact GPU currently installed and whether the computer is the small-form-factor or tower version before buying a replacement. Used GPUs can be cheaper, but make sure they physically fit and do not require more power than the Dell supply can provide.
