What to do if my PSU makes a popping sound?

I think my power supply unit (PSU) just exploded! I hadn't used my computer in a while and turned off the PSU since a thunderstorm was coming. When I did, it started crackling and I heard a small explosion noise from it. I'm really worried because ASUS says my warranty has expired even though I have proof of purchase from 1-2 months ago for my ROG Strix 1000-watt Platinum PSU. What should I do?

I opened the back panel of my PSU and smoke started coming out... I think something's very wrong!

Asus is known for having pretty bad warranty support. When you say they claim it expired, what do you mean? If you have the receipt showing you bought it recently, definitely show that to them. Also, whatever you do, don’t power on your PC if you think the PSU has issues!

I spoke to them and gave them the serial number, but they still wouldn’t accept it and insisted it expired on 3/11/2025.

Asus usually sets the warranty based on the manufacture date, which is often just one year from that date. Once you file an RMA and provide your proof of purchase, they should update the warranty to cover the full term from your purchase date. They do this to allow returns without proof for a short period as a courtesy.
