What to Expect as a First-Time Attendee at AWS re:Invent?

I'm planning to attend AWS re:Invent for the first time, but I haven't been able to book any sessions since I don't have my ticket purchased yet. I'm a bit anxious about how my experience will go, especially since I've read that it's advisable to reserve sessions in advance. However, I've heard about 'walk-up' attendance and it seems like you need to line up an hour ahead, which seems unreasonable and still doesn't guarantee a spot. Also, where can I find all the vendor booths? My collection of conference t-shirts is running low!

As someone who has been to re:Invent multiple times, here are a few big tips: Many sessions are recorded and available online the same day, so if you miss a big session, you can catch up later in the evening. Also, consider networking opportunities at lunch or with vendors; that might be the most valuable experience. If you have questions about your company's strategy, chatting with AWS experts in person is incredibly beneficial. Just remember, getting in as a walk-up is tough, so if you really want to see specific sessions, it's best to reserve if you can!

Thanks! Since it's too late for reservations, I'll focus on networking and talking to people.

Definitely try to reserve your spots! Walk-ups are hit or miss, and it’s a real scramble to get into sessions without a reservation. The event can feel chaotic, and if you want a decent spot, you may need to plan your schedule ahead of time. Consider making a spreadsheet of the talks you're interested in along with their locations. Also, be flexible with alternative talks – sometimes those unexpected sessions can be gems! Don't forget to check out the vendor booths; they’re usually clustered together, but you should set aside a good chunk of time to explore. And make sure to wear comfy shoes – you'll be on your feet a lot!

Thanks for the tips! I'm really stressed about missing out on talks. Should I just give up on the sessions and focus on the vendor booths?

Workshops are where it's at, but you definitely have to reserve those ahead of time or get up super early. The event can be a bit of a logistical nightmare, but it's also a lot of fun! If you end up missing sessions, try to find the content hubs – they usually stream multiple talks at once and provide headphones. Also, you'd be surprised at how much walking you'll do! I averaged around 6-8 miles daily, so comfy shoes are essential!

Is there really no point in going to venues if all the sessions are full? Can I just stream everything?
