What upgrades can I make to improve my old Ubuntu media PC?

Hey everyone! I've got an older Ubuntu setup that's been acting up, especially with the Nvidia drivers. I think it's time to consider some hardware upgrades since the current parts are quite outdated. I'm primarily using this as a media PC and don't really need high-end specs. Here are my current specs:

- Gigabyte Z97-HD3
- Intel Core i5-4690K
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960
- 1TB SSD Hard Drive
- 32GB DDR3 RAM (4 x 8GB)

I'd love any advice on what I should consider replacing while keeping costs low. Thanks a lot!

You might want to think about swapping out the GPU for something like an AMD card. Even a used RX 480 or 580 would give you a nice performance boost without breaking the bank. Just keep in mind, you won't be gaming on this old CPU anyway!

Awesome! Thanks for the tip on the graphics card.

Honestly, upgrading an old PC like this might not lead to significant improvements. You might have better luck with a device like an Nvidia Shield for media streaming instead.

I appreciate the Nvidia Shield suggestion, but I really need the versatility of a PC setup.

To potentially improve your setup, try updating the motherboard BIOS to the latest version. If you're looking to upgrade, the i7-4790K fits in the same socket as your current CPU and will give you more threads to work with. Also, switching to an AMD RX 6400 could solve those driver issues for good since AMD's drivers work seamlessly with Linux.

Thanks a ton for the detailed advice! I’ll definitely look into that cheaper graphics card option.

Ubuntu generally handles older hardware pretty well. Just be patient, and make sure everything fits right. It should work for what you need!

If gaming isn’t a concern, consider just using the integrated GPU. It should be fine for media playback if you're not gaming at all!
