DevOps covers a vast array of tools and responsibilities, and I'm particularly curious about the initial tasks that new cloud engineers handle. When you landed your first job working with AWS or Azure, what were the first tasks you tackled?

One of my first tasks was to deploy the entire stack to Azure and automate everything. It was quite the challenge! Now that I'm more experienced, I find myself having to redo many of those steps myself, but it helps me appreciate the process more.
When I started, the whole company was in the middle of migrating to the cloud. My platform team brought me in to analyze our costs since they’d just done a lift and shift from on-premises. I went from knowing virtually nothing about the cloud to designing scalable compute solutions and microservice workflows—definitely a steep learning curve!
My first major undertaking was creating PCI DSS compliant infrastructure. I was the only dev who enjoyed the harder stuff like infrastructure and automation, so it became my mission for several months. It was a challenging yet rewarding introduction to cloud engineering!
As a junior cloud engineer, my initial project involved running traffic analytics on a service that was pretty much obsolete. Once I confirmed it wasn’t receiving any traffic, I was asked to shut it down. Not the most exciting start, but it was a good learning experience!

What cloud provider and services did you select for your PCI DSS environment?
