What’s the Best Hardware for Hyper-V Cluster Storage Spaces Direct?

Hey everyone! I'm trying to find a comprehensive list of hardware that's supported for Hyper-V Cluster Storage Spaces Direct (S2D). We're planning to upgrade our existing setup to newer hardware, but every vendor we've talked to just gives us a vague 'It should work, but we won't take responsibility' kind of answer. I took a look at Microsoft's hardware compatibility list, but it seems outdated. Can anyone point me to some reliable external resources or provide insights based on their experiences? Here's the proposed hardware setup I'm considering:

- 2 ASUS RS501A-E12-RS12U 1U Rackmount servers with AMD EPYC processors.
- 8 Kingston 64GB DDR5 ECC RAM.
- Various high-capacity NVMe and SATA SSDs.
- Network and storage controllers.

Thanks a ton for any help! Looking forward to your tips!

A little tip: avoid setting up a 2-node S2D cluster if you can. They can be problematic, especially when issues arise.

Consider looking for vendors that specifically offer Azure-compatible hardware. It's often better supported.

Instead of using that older compatibility list, have you tried the Windows Server Catalog? It's really up-to-date and has better search features. Just keep in mind that you might struggle to find a vendor that will support S2D in production; many will just send you back to Microsoft if something goes wrong.

If it fits your budget, think about investing in a NAS. That way, you can decouple your storage from server uptime, which can save you a lot of headaches.
