I'm helping out a friend with his autistic son, who has a huge passion for technology. I have an older Panasonic Toughbook that I want to set up for him with a Linux distro that's really user-friendly. I'm also looking for some free games that he might enjoy. Has anyone in the Linux community set something like this up before?

If he seems interested in how computers work, you might want to look into Gentoo or even installing from scratch. It could be a great learning tool for him, depending on his level of interest. Just make sure he’s okay with a bit of difficulty at first, though!

Gentoo can be a bit tricky, but it’s rewarding for curious minds!

Exactly! If he enjoys challenges, this might really click!

If he loves to experiment, try Fedora or even an Arch-based distro like CachyOS. They’re a bit more complex but can be super rewarding to learn. Just be there to help him if he gets stuck—it can be a fun adventure!

Arch is fantastic for learning! Just keep a guide handy.

Definitely! Let him take the lead; he’ll learn so much!

Ubuntu is another solid choice. It's straightforward and has tons of documentation available for when he's troubleshooting or learning. He might also enjoy Pop!_OS if he’s into gaming, as it’s optimized for that.

Pop!_OS is great for gaming and has a nice user interface! Good call.

Yeah, I switched to Pop!_OS for the gaming features and it's been awesome!

For a kid who's enthusiastic about tech, I’d recommend starting with Linux Mint. It's super user-friendly for new users and has a nice range of educational apps and games. Plus, if he gets tired of it, it’s easy to switch to something else later, like KDE or GNOME. Just let him explore!

CuriousMind21 -

Mint does have a great software manager too, so he can install new apps easily!

Totally agree! It's the go-to for many when starting out.
