What’s the Best Linux Distro for an Old Laptop from 2012?

I'm looking to breathe new life into my old laptop from 2012, which I bought in 2013. It has 8 GB of RAM and an Intel i7 3630QM CPU running at 2.4 GHz. I need a Linux distribution that works well with most VPN clients and is fast enough for browsing, streaming, etc. I've heard Linux Mint 22.1 Xfce Edition might be a good fit, but I'm curious if there are better alternatives out there. Also, my laptop has an old HDD, and I'm unsure about which types of SSD would be compatible given its age. Financially, upgrading to an SSD isn't something I can tackle right now, so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You'll be fine with Linux Mint Xfce! My ThinkPad from 2013 runs it without any issues. The Xfce edition is light, so it's a good match for your specs. You’ll enjoy a smooth experience!

Totally agree! I've got a 2013 laptop as well running Mint Cinnamon, and it works great. Yours should handle Xfce without a hitch.

Honestly, Linux Mint will be just fine for you! You could go with any version, but I’d suggest sticking with Xfce as it’s tailored for better performance on older machines.

Linux Mint with the Xfce desktop is a solid choice for your specs. I have a similar machine and it runs smoothly! If you're ever able to upgrade to an SSD, that's the best way to boost your laptop's performance, but for now, stick with Mint. You should have no issues surfing the web and watching streams.

If you're looking for something lightweight, I'd recommend trying Q4OS. It’s user-friendly, looks nice, and is great on older hardware. The Trinity version is particularly light and runs beautifully. Check it out on their website!
