What's the Best Old Phone to Use as an MP3 Player?

I'm looking to repurpose an old phone purely for music usage. I don't care about the camera, display, or any fancy features—just the battery life and storage capacity are important. I'm thinking around 32GB is good, but 64GB would be even better. Should I just stick with an old phone, or would a dedicated MP3 player be a better option?

Using an old Android phone can be a fantastic decision! They're often really cheap or even free, plus some models have replaceable batteries. You can also root them to get rid of any bloatware, making them perfect for offline music without unwanted apps getting in the way.

For a simple solution, you could grab any old Android phone, reset it, disable Wi-Fi, and uninstall unnecessary apps. Use it solely for music, and you’ll find that it’s often more efficient and offers longer battery life compared to a dedicated MP3 player.

If you want a device solely for music, you might find an old iPod Mini with Rockbox enhances your experience. The controls are better suited for music playbacks than a random old phone, and iPods tend to have better long-term support than random smartphones.

If you're looking for a specific model, consider the Samsung Galaxy S7. It's got solid performance as a music player, and many people have had great experiences with it. You can also find others like the LG V30 or V60 that come with great DACs and ample storage options.

AudiophileFan99: Absolutely! The LG V20 has an excellent DAC for audio quality. It's got headphone jacks, an SD card slot, and a user-replaceable battery, making it a reliable option for music lovers.

RetroTechie101: I had a similar experience with the Galaxy series. It's a fantastic way to enjoy music without mounting any significant costs.

Ultimately, it really depends on your personal preference. If you're like me and prefer everything in one device, then just using an older phone is practical. But if you want just music playback with ease of use, a compact dedicated player might be the way to go!
