I'm on the hunt for the best CPU that excels in single-thread performance and works with DDR4. I'm noticing that good Ryzen options are hard to find (the 3D cache models are out of stock and prices are skyrocketing). The 5950X seems more suited for video rendering, where the GPU does most of the heavy lifting. I've mostly stuck to AMD and NVIDIA, so I haven't kept up with Intel CPUs, but I've heard that Intel might have superior options for DDR4 motherboards. Can anyone recommend something?

Definitely look at the i9-12900K or 14900K. They outperform any Zen 3 CPUs. While Ryzen 5000 series shares the same IPC as Intel's 11th gen, Intel's 12th and 14th gens have seen a nice increase in IPC and cache efficiency.
If gaming performance is your main focus, context about your specific workloads would help a lot. For single-core performance, both AMD's 5000 series and Intel's 14th gen models work well with DDR4. Typically, the Ryzen 5600 or Intel i5-14600 are solid choices for gaming.
If you're open to AMD, the 5800X or 5700X on the AM4 platform are good options. However, also consider the Intel 14th Gen systems, which can deliver high performance but at the cost of more power.
I’d recommend the i9-14900KF. It’s quite powerful. Alternatively, the 14900KS can give you even higher speeds, plus you can overclock the 14900K/F to reach similar performance levels.
The 14900KS is definitely the top pick, but keep in mind that using DDR4 may hold you back somewhat from getting the full potential out of it.
