I'm trying to figure out the best method to cap FPS for a fast-paced competitive game. Should I set the cap to match my monitor's refresh rate, or should I focus on metrics like 0.1% lows, 1% lows, average FPS, or max FPS? What approach works best for smoother gameplay?

If your average FPS is 200 but you experience 1% lows around 60, try setting it around 100. But honestly, it's subjective — you'll have to find what feels smooth for you!
Honestly, it varies for everyone. I used to have a 5900X and a 4070Ti, and I capped my FPS at 160 for CS2. Later, I moved to a 9800X3D setup and capped it at 330. My trick is to find a balance between my 1% lows and average FPS — for example, if my 100fps lows contrast with an average of 200, I'd set the cap to 150. This helps make gameplay feel smoother since bigger drops in FPS are more noticeable.
You could hide your FPS counter and just see how it feels during gameplay. Sometimes, you won't even notice the cap unless there are significant stutters.
That sounds sketchy. I don't think you should cap it that low!
