What’s the best way to clone my desktop’s C: drive to my new laptop without removing the m.2?

I'm looking to clone the C: drive from my desktop to a new laptop without having to take out the m.2 from the laptop. I have experience doing this before, but I can't remember the exact process I used. Both drives are the same size, and I need a method that allows me to boot the cloning software from an external source, as I might be away from my desktop during this process. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

You could consider using a program like Easeus ToDo Free Backup on your desktop. First, create a full image of your C: drive and save it to an external drive. Then, use that same software to create an emergency USB drive. Next, boot your laptop with this USB, which will load Easeus and let you restore the image onto the laptop. As a precaution, it's a good idea to make a backup image of the laptop before you start the cloning process, just in case something goes wrong.

Have you checked if your desktop has more M.2 slots? If that's not an option, you could transfer the image to a hard drive and then use that to flash it to the laptop later. Just keep in mind that direct copying over USB or network options can be complicated, so make sure you have an intermediary drive.

If you're up for a more technical solution, try using Clonezilla. You'd need a bootable USB drive with Clonezilla and an external drive that has enough space for the image. Boot your desktop from the USB drive, create an image of the C: drive, and store it on the external drive. Then, boot the laptop using the same USB and clone the image to the m.2 drive in the laptop.
