What’s the Best Way to Extend Power for My PC Build?

I'm building a PC with a 5090 and a 9950x3d, and it's pretty heavy-duty, powered by a 1200W PSU. Unfortunately, my current power cable won't reach the wall socket, so I need an extension. I have an older extension cord that's not very robust, so I'm looking for advice on what I should do. Any recommendations? Thanks!

When selecting an extension cord, check what load it can handle. You'll want to look for something that specifies a maximum amperage and voltage, like 'Max 10A / 250V' which equals 2500W. In your case, the total wattage needed should be well under that limit, usually around 900W for your setup. Just make sure to get one rated for your needs – should be easy to find something that works at 120V.

You definitely want to use a surge protector at the very least. Given the heavy-duty nature of your setup, it's important to protect your PC from potential surges, especially based on the condition of your home's wiring. I recommend picking up a 6ft or 10ft surge protector; they’re pretty cheap and available at most stores. In the long run, consider getting an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to keep your PC safe from power outages.

A standard 16-gauge extension cord is more than enough for your 1200W setup, as it only draws 10 amps at that voltage. Unless your cable starts getting warm while in use, you shouldn't worry too much. Just make sure it's a sturdy cord and you'll be fine.
