What’s the Best Way to Safely Disconnect External Hard Drives?

I'm trying to clarify the best practice for shutting down my computer when I have external hard drives connected. Should I be ejecting the drives first before turning off my computer, or is it fine to shut down the computer first and then unplug the drives? I've seen conflicting advice online and I'm particularly worried about preventing any file corruption. What do you all recommend?

Some say it's no biggie - that external drives are designed to handle a bit of randomness, but personally, I'd still recommend ejecting. You can easily do this through the system tray on Windows or Finder on Mac to make sure everything's finalized before unplugging.

Good to note that the shutdown process usually ensures all pending write operations are finished, so your files should be safe if you shut down normally. Just avoid force shutting down; that could lead to issues, especially if something is still being written to the drive.

Honestly, either way is fine! When you shut down your computer, it basically does the same things as safely removing the drive, like closing open files and unmounting the drive. So as long as your system is functioning well, you shouldn’t run into any problems with either method.

I prefer shutting down the computer first, just to be super safe. It's not that external hard drives can't be unplugged like USB sticks; it's just simpler to shut everything down completely. If you often swap drives, ejecting can feel tedious but better safe than sorry!
