What’s the Best Way to Set Up a Time Machine Backup Drive After AFP?

I've looked into setting up a Time Machine drive since AFP is being phased out, and it seems like a NAS server is the most common solution. However, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by the potential costs and complexity. Is there an easier way to do this for personal use, especially for backing up over WiFi?

It really depends on what you're backing up. How many Macs do you have?

Sorry about that! I meant to mention—I've got a couple of MacBooks. We currently use an 8TB drive connected to our router for automatic Time Machine backups.

Yeah, Synology provides clear instructions for making their NAS function as a Time Machine server, and I've had a good experience with mine. What’s your current setup for backups?

You might want to check out Apple's guide on setting up a Mac as a network backup destination. Also, a Synology DiskStation can be a solid choice for Time Machine—really easy to set up. Just remember, starting your first backup over Ethernet is a lot smoother; WiFi is fine afterward.
