What’s the best way to set up offsite backups with Proxmox?

Hey everyone! We've recently transitioned to Proxmox and Proxmox Backup Server after using ESXi and Veeam, and we're really happy with the change. Now, I'm looking to establish a reliable offsite backup solution and would love to hear your thoughts. Should I set up an offsite VM with Proxmox Backup Server? Alternatively, would using a managed Proxmox Backup Server be a good idea? Or maybe connecting an S3 storage directly to my local Proxmox Backup Server? Any insights or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Setting up a remote PBS and connecting it as a target in your local PBS with sync jobs works great! It’s straightforward to do, and once it's set up, it runs really smoothly.

I have my Proxmox Backup Server running as a VM at a remote location, which then syncs to StorJ using an S3 endpoint. This setup has been really efficient for me.

Just out of curiosity, you mentioned Veeam before—did you ever explore their support for Proxmox? They claim to have full support for it along with VMware and Hyper-V. I've used Veeam in the past on Flasharrays at another site, and it works well, though we're considering Proxmox too as it seems more cost-effective.

We also use a second PBS instance at a different site with sync jobs, and it works perfectly. If budget is a concern, you can opt for a small mini PC with big HDDs at the remote site. This not only provides reliable backups but also helps control storage costs with deduplication.

It really depends on what you need, but overall having another Proxmox Backup Server at a remote site is often the best choice. You can set up sync jobs easily, allowing you to schedule backups from your local PBS to the remote one. Just keep in mind that larger restores can be a bit slow through S3 because of its nature. If you want something more hands-off, consider a managed service for Proxmox Backup—it might save you time on maintenance.
