I'm not super tech-savvy, but I'm looking to upgrade the memory on my Dell Inspiron 3585 with an AMD Ryzen 3 2300U and 8GB RAM that I added a while back. I've been using Ableton recently, and I think it's time for more RAM. My main use isn't gaming, but I do play a bit on Slippi sometimes. I'm trying to decide between a 16GB kit that's rated at 3200MHz or two 8GB sticks rated at 2400MHz, which are just a little cheaper. They're both DDR4 from Crucial. Can someone explain the difference in MHz ratings? Will upgrading to the 3200MHz RAM matter for my laptop, or should I stick with the 2400MHz? Thanks in advance!

Your Ryzen 3 2300U only supports a maximum RAM speed of 2400MHz, so going for 3200MHz won't give you any performance boost. Both the 3200MHz and 2400MHz options will actually run at 2400 in your laptop. If the 16GB kit you’re considering is indeed two 8GB sticks, it’s generally better to have two sticks for dual-channel performance, even though the difference isn't huge. If you can get the 3200MHz for a similar price and it’s confirmed compatible with your laptop, then go for it!
To add on to what was said, it's true that both RAM options will perform the same on your laptop. If the price difference isn’t significant, definitely get the 16GB kit, as having more RAM will help with multitasking and working in Ableton. Also, just make sure to check Crucial's site for compatibility, as different models can sometimes vary. Good luck!
I’ll do that! Thanks for the tip!
Awesome, thanks for clearing that up!
