I just had internet installed and the ONT box looks a lot like a router. I have to connect a separate router to it, so I'm wondering why the ONT has an antenna. What's the purpose of this setup? I couldn't find any clear answers online, and I'm just curious about how this works. Any insights would be appreciated!

The antenna might not even be for you. It's possible it's used by the ISP for remote health monitoring or could serve as a 4G/5G backup. Either way, you likely don’t have control over those features since they’re meant for the provider's use.
More recent ONTs, like those from Nokia, are indeed all-in-one devices. Some ISPs utilize them fully, while others might still keep them separate. So it really depends on your ISP’s approach!
In some places, like Malaysia, ISPs are integrating the ONT and router into one unit. Like with Unifi, they transitioned from a separate ONT and router to an all-in-one device for easier setup and better speed support. This could be happening in your area too!
