What’s the deal with the power supply for my new KVM switch?

I recently picked up a basic KVM switch to swap between my PCs, and it has a USB-C port intended for power. However, I noticed that it relies on the HDMI cable for power to operate. Without the HDMI connected, the switch doesn't turn on. Is there a risk that the USB-C port could be used for something harmful? This is my first experience with a KVM, and I want to make sure it's safe before I rely on it for work. Don't want to give my employer's IT team a reason to let me go!

That’s a good question! There’s quite a variety of KVM switches out there, each with different designs. Which specific model and brand do you have?

Some KVM switches have a dedicated power input, which helps maintain stable connections when switching between devices. Unpowered models might disconnect peripherals when you switch, which could lead to issues. If you’re unsure, you can connect the USB-C port to a USB charger to be safe. But since you’re using this for work, I’d recommend checking with your IT department or buying from trusted vendors.

While some HDMI devices can provide power, not all can do so when the monitor is off, and the same goes for USB. Using a USB port with a standard wall charger should be fine. I’ve used many KVMs over the years without any problems.
