What’s the Most Reliable 4TB NVMe SSD Right Now?

Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle with my SSD situation. My Adata SX8100 4TB has started causing problems after four years of use—sometimes it drops from my system completely. I'm going to attempt an RMA, but I might end up selling it or using it in my NVMe NAS setup. So I'm on the hunt for a reliable replacement 4TB NVMe SSD. I've read mixed reviews about the Samsung 990 Pro—it seems to have some degradation issues—and I'm also wary of drives with Innogrit controllers. The SX850X seems to have some individual problems too, but they don't appear as widespread.

Given that most drives will likely be QLC, and TLC options are really expensive, I'm ideally looking for something with DRAM. I mainly use my drives for gaming now, and I want something that is rock-solid since this is the third SSD that's failed on me. Should I consider server-grade SSDs? What's a reliable SSD brand or controller that's known to work well? Should I steer clear of the 990 Pro if it has these issues, or is it worth considering?

I recommend checking out the WD Black SN850X if you're looking for something high-performance. It’s a solid choice and often gets great reviews from gamers looking for speed and reliability.

What’s your gaming setup like? If it’s mostly general gaming, the SN850X might be a good option too. It has great performance and generally fewer complaints than the 990 Pro.

I'm sticking with the 970 Evo Plus as my OS drive, so I don’t have to worry about the heavy load on that one. But yeah, if the SN850X is reliable, that could be a solid alternative!

I've always gone with Samsung myself since they’ve been reliable for me. Aim for a TLC SSD like the PRO series from recent years. The earlier models are just as good without the heating issues of the latest ones. Just stick to proven models and you should be fine.

Honestly, if you're concerned about the 990 Pro's issues, you might still want to consider it. Most of the problems have been addressed with firmware updates, and people have found it really reliable overall. Just remember, QLC drives without DRAM usually aren’t great for endurance. If you have consistent problems with drives, it could be worth checking your motherboard or connections too, not just the SSDs themselves.

Yeah, that’s true! But I’ve seen some threads claiming the issues span multiple years, so I understand your hesitation. Just be aware that some manufacturers don’t pair QLC with DRAM because it’s costlier. But the 990 Pro is TLC with DRAM, so it should be solid for gaming!

Also, did you check out the link that mentioned problems with the 990 Pro? It seems like some people are still facing issues even after the RMA, which is a bummer.
