I'm really curious about what it takes to become a Cloud Solution Architect. For those of you who have made this journey, could you share your career paths? What kinds of certifications did you pursue? Are you enjoying your role? Do you feel confident in it? Are you planning to stick with this path or might you consider moving into enterprise architecture instead?
I'd love to hear about your day-to-day work. Is it manageable or quite demanding? Do you have to visit a data center, or is everything typically handled remotely? What about the financial aspect—do you find it to be rewarding? Please share as much detail as you can; I'm looking to follow this path and I'd like to learn from your experiences.

I started my career as a software developer and noticed that the cloud was emerging around the early 2010s. I dedicated myself to learning Azure and eventually became an MVP for ten years. I ended up being hired by Microsoft as a principal architect! For anyone looking to become a Cloud Solution Architect, I'd say a mix of study and experience is crucial. It’s important to build skills across development, databases, security, and networking—focus on one area until you're comfortable before moving on to the next. Also, reading System Design books can be super helpful!
What books do you recommend for learning system design?
To really stand out as a Cloud Architect, you often need a specialty, whether it’s networking, databases, or security. The ability to understand cost structures is crucial too, especially as the projects scale. It's not a straightforward path; gaining technical depth in your area before branching out is key. Try to absorb as much as you can from your current role before jumping into an architect position.
That makes a lot of sense—thanks for the insight!
I'm aiming to specialize, any tips on which area to focus on?
I first worked at a managed service provider (MSP) as a sys admin, then moved into cloud support. Certifications from both Microsoft and AWS really helped my career. I find that being a solution architect involves more strategy rather than hands-on work, which can be a nice break from daily operational tasks. The pay is solid too—around $140k to $190k, depending on your expertise.
Do you need advanced certifications for that kind of salary?
I'm currently working towards my certifications. Great to hear it's rewarding!
In my experience, becoming a Cloud Architect isn't just about mastering Azure. While having that knowledge helps, you have to be really good at technical writing and leadership as well. I recommend starting with resources like Gregor Hohpe's 'Architect Elevator' and courses on Udemy like Mami Levi’s. It’s also essential to understand technical fundamentals thoroughly. Remember, it's a journey; keep digging deeper and practicing your skills!
Great resources! I’ll definitely check those out.
Is Gregor Hohpe still actively teaching?

Your advice is priceless, thank you!
