Where to Begin with Learning AI and Coding?

I'm trying to figure out where to start with AI and coding, especially since there are so many tools available that it feels overwhelming. I have some basic skills in HTML, CSS, Java, and a bit of command line experience, but I'm mostly lost on how to proceed. I have a Gemini Pro and Perplexity Pro subscription, and I'm eager to create some apps and improve my understanding of coding. I'm looking for free courses or resources that aren't formal college courses. I'm running Linux Ubuntu on a decent setup with a 1TB SSD, 32GB RAM, and an i5 processor, but my graphics card isn't great. I'd love suggestions for coursework, apps to use for coding, and what I should focus on practicing.

Using AI tools while learning to code can speed things up, but remember, it’s not a substitute for understanding the fundamentals. You can check out the OSSU Computer Science curriculum on GitHub; it’s a great resource!

I love that analogy! My old math teacher used to say that computers are fast, but not smart! Thanks for the suggestion!

For a fun and exploratory coding experience, consider an AI IDE like Cursor, which allows you to play around with multiple models for a single subscription. It’s great for writing random scripts! My workplace uses GitHub Copilot for actual projects, which I find helpful for debugging and documentation.

Is Cursor available on Linux? I’ve heard good things about using GitHub for project management—sounds like a solid choice!

Definitely look into Copilot! I prefer it to some other AI tools since it's more focused on coding.

What type of apps are you looking to develop? Defining your goals will help narrow down which tools and languages to focus on. You mentioned AI—are you planning to create applications that utilize AI for art or something else? I’m curious!

CreativeMind77 -

Right! My aim is to create different kinds of art and memory-related apps. Think about generating aesthetic pieces based on parameters. It's really fascinating to see how you can tweak outputs!

Good point! That's why I’m here—trying to figure out the best direction!

If your goal is to learn, I’d say you should be cautious with AI tools. Many folks end up dependent on them and then struggle with actual project work down the line.

It's essential to clarify what you want to make. Telling me you want to 'get started' isn't enough. Delve into specifics to get actionable advice. AI tools can output working code swiftly, but they won't give you a solid understanding of computer science principles.

ArtisticSoul99 -

Absolutely! I want to start implementing automated features based on different datasets—exciting stuff!

CreativeMind77 -

Totally! I appreciate the encouragement to think deeper.
