Where to Start for Buying a Gaming PC for My 12-Year-Old?

I'm looking for advice on getting a gaming computer for my son this Christmas. He's 12 years old and enjoys playing games casually with friends, mostly on his PS5 and Nintendo Switch. We want to get him a gaming setup for his bedroom, and we have a budget of about $700, with some flexibility to go up to $1,000 if necessary.

Besides gaming, we'd like the computer to handle some homework and simple design software, as we want something versatile rather than just a gaming rig. I know this is on the lower end for gaming PCs, but we're hoping to find something suitable. I'm also curious if I need to seek help to build one or if we should look for a prebuilt option instead. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

If you live near a MicroCenter, that's a goldmine for deals, especially during the holidays. They often have bundles that fit your budget. If not, Costco has some decent prebuilt options too. If neither of those are available, I’d be happy to help you put together a build list that works for your budget! Let me know your location and I can help further.

No MicroCenter or Costco nearby, but I'd love a build list if you're willing! Also, what should I realistically budget for what we're trying to do?
