Which AM4 CPU is best for a gaming upgrade right now?

My friend is looking to upgrade his PC and normally I'd recommend going for an AM5 CPU, but he'd have to switch from DDR4 to DDR5 RAM, which is just too much hassle! His target GPU is a 5070 Ti, and I was thinking the 5800X3D would be a great match for it, but I'm having trouble finding one. What would you suggest for the best AM4 CPU that won't bottleneck his new GPU?

The 5950X could be worth considering based on the types of games your friend plays. Also, boards from ASRock and MSI support both DDR4 and DDR5, which gives added flexibility.

If you're considering the 5800X3D, you might check places like eBay or local listings on Facebook Marketplace. Are you looking for brand new or would used parts work?

The 5700X, which isn't X3D, is still a really solid option. I used it with a 7900 XT and the GPU was the limiting factor in performance, so I think it would definitely pair well with a 5070 Ti.

The 5800X3D is definitely the top choice for gaming right now, followed closely by the 5700X3D and next the 5600X3D. Just be prepared to search a bit because they're pretty hard to come by, as you mentioned! Good luck!

Any of the AM4 X3D CPUs will be pricey and in short supply. But honestly, any 8-core, 16-thread AM4 CPU should do just fine for your friend's needs. If he's playing mostly at 1440p or 4K, the CPU becomes less of a bottleneck compared to 1080p since the GPU will be the main driver in those situations.
