Which AMD Ryzen Processor Should I Choose for Gaming and Productivity?

Hey everyone! I'm trying to figure out which AMD Ryzen processor to get because it's been about 12 years since I last built a PC and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. I'm specifically looking for an AM5 processor that's released fairly recently. My main goal is to do some 1440UW gaming, particularly World of Warcraft (no judgment, please!), and I also need it to handle productivity tasks like running multiple Chrome tabs, Putty, Wireshark, RDP, and office applications. I'm not into LLMs or any heavy audio or video editing. I'm also planning to invest in a motherboard and memory now and possibly upgrade the CPU and GPU later as prices drop. I'm considering the Ryzen 7 7800X3D or the Ryzen 7 7950X—what do you think? Also, what's the general opinion on motherboards from Asus, Gigabyte, or MSI? I'm looking at maybe getting a B850 or potentially an X870 for a bit of future-proofing, but I'm not interested in overclocking.

You can't go wrong with a Ryzen 7000 or 9000 series CPU. I use a Ryzen 7 9700X and it runs great for gaming and productivity for me. Just make sure the GHz is high enough for gaming and that you have 8 cores and 16 threads for productivity tasks.

I’d recommend going with the 7800X3D for your needs. The extra cores in the 7950X might go unused for what you’re doing. Plus, the 7800X3D is already a powerhouse for gaming!

Yeah, the extra features of the X870 like USB4 and Wi-Fi 7 would be cool, but if you don't really need them, maybe stick with the B850.
