I'm trying to figure out which processor would be better for budget gaming: the Ryzen 5 8400F or the Ryzen 5 5600. I've heard that the 8400 is on the newer AM5 socket, but many people say it's not great for gaming. The 5600 uses the older AM4 socket. My gaming style isn't too hardcore; I play games like Zelda emulators, EQ2, and WoW, with some occasional titles like No Man's Sky and Call of Duty. I'm also curious about future upgrades—if I go with the 8400F, will I have an easy upgrade path since it's AM5? Or should I just pick the 5600 if it's genuinely better? I'll be using a Radeon RX 6600 with either one.

A lot of folks argue the 5600X actually outperforms the 8400F for gaming. The 8400F’s primary benefit is being on the latest platform, but if you're looking for pure performance now, the 5600 might feel more reliable. But remember, future upgrades will be easier with the AM5 setup.
Just keep in mind that the 8400F has less L3 cache compared to the 5600, which can impact performance in some scenarios. That’s why you’ll hear a lot about how much better the X3D CPUs are. If gaming is your primary concern, the 5600 has some advantages to consider.
The Ryzen 5 8400F is actually a solid choice. In many benchmarks, it tends to be faster than the Ryzen 5 5600, and since it’s on the AM5 platform, you'll have the option to upgrade to better CPUs in the future without changing motherboards. With a Radeon RX 6600, you won’t see significant performance differences in AAA games between the two processors.

I’m leaning towards the 8400F mainly for the upgrade path, but it’s good to know the 5600 could offer better performance right now. If I choose the 5600, will switching to a newer AM5 chip require a whole new motherboard and RAM?
