Which CPU Should I Choose for Future-Proofing My Build?

I'm gearing up for an upgrade after almost 8 years with my current setup. I'm running an i7-9700K, and it's starting to show its age in various tasks. I'm considering going for a really powerful CPU now to ensure it lasts another 8 years. I'm thinking about getting an R9 9950X3D along with an upcoming RTX 5080 or 5080 Super, keeping my RAM at 32GB G.Skill 6000. My question is: will a powerful system like this hold up in the long run? Also, how does future-proofing work—specifically, is it related to the number of cores? Does having more cores mean my build will last longer? I can afford this setup, and my main concern revolves around the CPU. Thanks for your help!

An overkill build like the R9 9950X3D will hold up decently in the future, especially for gaming thanks to its 3D cache. However, it's worth noting that you might not see much of a performance boost compared to something like the Ryzen 9800X3D. When it comes to longevity, more cores can help in workloads that require multi-core performance, but for gaming, they'll often rely on single-core performance—so newer CPUs could potentially outperform the 9950X3D later on. If you're exploring future upgrades, you might want to consider a less expensive CPU for now and save some money for future improvements.

Yeah, I'm also wary about getting stuck with 8 cores. I'd only go with the R7 9800X3D if it's going to be as relevant as the 9950X3D down the line. I'm just planning my build to last without upgrading again.
