Hey everyone! I'm currently building a second-hand PC for my girlfriend. I already have a Ryzen 3700X and 32GB of DDR4 RAM, but I recently bought a bundle that came with a motherboard and a Ryzen 5500. I know the 5500 might perform better in games, but it lacks PCIe 4.0 support and has a smaller cache compared to the 3700X. My girlfriend uses the PC mainly for Photoshop, light video editing, and gaming. Now, I'm stuck deciding whether to keep the 3700X or the new 5500. Which CPU would be the better choice for her needs?

For your situation, I'd recommend sticking with the 3700X. It has more cores, which can be quite helpful for video editing and multitasking, plus it has the advantage of PCIe 4.0, which can be beneficial for future upgrades. The 5500 doesn’t really offer a significant upgrade in gaming either since it's more comparable to the 3600 than a true upgrade.
I agree, the 3700X is definitely the better pick. The 5500's performance is closer to the 3600, and since you have the 3700X already, it's a solid choice with those additional cores. It's more suited for the heavy tasks like Photoshop and light video editing your girlfriend does.
I see where you're coming from, but don’t undervalue the 5500. It’s a 65W CPU and can perform slightly better in certain gaming scenarios. If you have the chance, why not benchmark both CPUs and see which one performs better for your specific use cases?

That sounds like a smart idea! Testing them could give you the best perspective on what works for her.
