Which CPU Should I Choose for My New Gaming PC: 285K or 14900K?

I'm about to build a new gaming PC but I'm torn between going with the Intel 285K or the 14900K. My current rig is eight years old, and I'll be transferring my RTX 5090 to this new setup. I have always used Intel and I'd prefer to stick with what I know. I'm not really planning on upgrading the CPU later since that doesn't appeal to me. Any thoughts on which option might be better for gaming?

You might want to rethink your loyalty to Intel. AMD has been performing better in gaming for a while now. If you're insistent on Intel, the 285K is the latest gen and more budget-friendly than the 14900K, but I'd still suggest looking at AMD's offerings.

I hear you! But I am also eyeing a new OLED TV for gaming, so I do want the best I can get for 4K.

Honestly, if you're gaming primarily, the Ryzen 9800X3D is worth considering as it outperforms both Intel chips in those scenarios. Given your 5090, you'll really notice the difference in performance!

What about the motherboards? Is there an AMD option comparable to the MEG Z890 GODLIKE? I love all the USB ports and features it has.

Yeah, I've read mixed reviews. Some say the 9800X3D isn't as versatile, but it seems like it could be the best choice for gaming.

Well, current Intel options like the 14th gen are having some issues, and you might find the 285K isn’t as powerful as the 14900K in most games. If you're gaming, though, consider the X3D series from AMD; it's genuinely outperforming both Intel choices in many games right now.

That's a valid point. I've had good experiences with Intel, but I’ve seen a lot of bad press around the 14th gen chips.

I'd pick the 9800X3D or a similar AMD chip for best performance. If you're not too keen on upgrading down the line, going with AMD could be a smarter long-term choice. Also, with a good system like the 5090, you'll want something that won’t bottleneck that power.

That makes sense! I've just been stuck in my ways with Intel.
