Hey everyone! I'm looking to upgrade my CPU and need some advice. Here's my current setup:
- CPU: i7-10700K
- GPU: RTX 3080 (I plan to keep this for now, will upgrade later)
- Planned motherboard: ROG Strix B850
- RAM: Considering 6000MHz CL30 (any recommendations for RAM speed and size would be appreciated)
I mainly play competitive games at 1080p, but I also enjoy some AAA titles occasionally to relax. Here are the CPU options I'm considering along with their local prices:
- Ryzen 5 9600X — $235
- Ryzen 7 9700X — $316
- Ryzen 7 7800X3D — $384
- Ryzen 9 9800X3D — $500
What do you all think is the best value for future-proofing, especially given my gaming habits?

If you're looking for the best performance, the 9800X3D is the way to go. It’s a powerhouse for gaming. Just keep in mind that it will really stretch your budget!
Definitely keep your budget in mind. While the 9800X3D is top-tier for gaming, your budget will take a hit. Plus, if you’re into video editing (even casually), factor that into your decision as well.
Honestly, considering your current CPU is still solid, I'd suggest waiting for the next gen of CPUs. Your i7-10700K is performing well, and the new AMD and Intel releases should provide better options. What frame rates are you currently getting, and what do you aim for with an upgrade?
In the games I play, I’m getting around 200-300 FPS, but I’m looking for something stable at 360 FPS or higher.
I just upgraded to the 7800X3D, and I think it leaves room for future upgrades without breaking the bank. The 9800X3D is great, but I felt like I'd get less value out of upgrading again soon if I went for that right now.
I was leaning towards the 9700X too, but now I’m considering the 7800X3D or even the 9800X3D. Just not sure if I should spend that much.

True, but I’m wondering if the higher price is really justified compared to the 9700X or even the 7800X3D. Is it worth it?
