I'm building a new PC for my son on a tight budget, and I'm debating between the 4060 8GB and the 3060 12GB. He mainly plays games at 1080p and will also use Adobe Illustrator with a graphics tablet. I'm a bit worried about the 8GB limit of the 4060 for future games, but I'm not sure if he'd actually use the full 12GB of the 3060 at that resolution. Additionally, since I don't see him often and his mom isn't tech-savvy, any potential problems with settings or drivers could be an issue. Any advice would be appreciated!

If you're choosing between those two cards for 1080p gaming, I would definitely go with the 4060. It's just a better GPU overall for that resolution, and newer games can actually use more than 8GB of VRAM on ultra settings, so even though you're worried, it might be a safer bet for future-proofing with the 4060.
The 4060 indeed has the edge in performance. There are already some games that push beyond 8GB of VRAM at 1080p. However, if it's a Christmas gift and you have time to wait, consider saving for the upcoming RTX 5060 release; it might have better specs at a similar price point. Just be aware of any ongoing AMD driver issues as they could affect performance too.
That’s great to know! Do you have any idea when the 5060 might drop and how much it might cost?
