Which GPU Should I Choose: RTX 5070 or RX 9070 for 1440p Gaming and Video Editing?

I'm looking for advice on whether I should go for the RTX 5070 or the RX 9070. I recently upgraded to a 1440p OLED monitor, but my current GPU, the 6650 XT, isn't causing stuttering in Valorant, but I need more frames for other games like Fortnite and some single-player titles. I'm also a film student, and I've been experiencing stuttering while editing videos. Here in Australia, the RX 9070 XT is priced at $1249, while the RX 9070 is $1100. On the other hand, I can snag the RTX 5070 for $980. I've seen benchmarks showing the 9070 performs better in most games, but the margin isn't huge. Is the extra $120 for the 9070 worth it, especially since I've heard NVIDIA cards are generally better for video editing? I'm not too concerned about the additional 4GB of VRAM since I mostly play less demanding games.

Honestly, at that price, I'd definitely pick the 5070—it's a no-brainer for the value you get!

If you're comfortable playing around with the RX 9070, there's a way to flash its BIOS to get performance close to the 9070 XT. But if that's too technical for you, just go for the 5070. Also, keep an eye on sales, especially on Ozbargain, since there are often good deals available!

Make sure to check overclocking capabilities of the 5070 because it might surprise you; it could be pretty competitive!

For 1440p gaming, the RX 9070 shows slightly better performance averages, but it really depends on the specific games you’re playing. Also, for video apps, the performance can vary widely depending on what you are using. You might want to investigate which GPU your editing software favors.

I'd suggest the RX 9070 for general gaming. However, considering the prices you've listed, the 5070 is a solid choice too. They’re pretty close on performance at 1440p, but it really boils down to what software you'll be using for your video editing.

With the issues I’ve seen reported on some 5000 series cards, I’d lean towards the 9070 just to avoid potential headaches down the line.

The RX 9070 can overclock really well, often performing at levels close to the XT version. But you should definitely look up specific benchmarks based on the software you use for editing; if it relies heavily on the GPU, the 5070 might pull ahead at stock performance.

That's true! I've seen benchmarks suggesting that the 5000 series can hold its own pretty well in overclocking, so it's worth checking both cards in that regard.
