Which Linux Distribution is Best for an Old Laptop?

I recently stumbled upon an old laptop featuring an Intel i5 4210U processor with either Intel HD Graphics or a GeForce 820M, and it has 4GB of RAM. I'm unsure which Linux distribution would be best suited for it, as I've heard of various options but worry that this machine may struggle with heavier distros. Can anyone recommend lightweight distros that could help breathe new life into this old device? I'd really appreciate any suggestions!

If you’re looking for something ultra-lightweight, you could give antiX a shot or go even lighter with Q4OS. They’re designed to run better on low-spec machines.

Here are some great options for lightweight Linux distros that should work well on your laptop:
1. Linux Mint (XFCE Edition) - perfect for beginners.
2. Lubuntu - a light and modern mix.
3. MX Linux - excellent for reviving older hardware.
4. antiX - very lightweight if that's what you need.

You can probably run most distros decently, although 4GB does limit you a bit. Using zRAM can help manage RAM issues. If you’re unsure, many users start with Linux Mint Cinnamon since it's user-friendly.

Consider trying MX Linux. A tip: if you can tether your phone via USB, you might get internet access to download the right drivers for your WiFi card after installing!
