Which Linux Distro Should I Choose for Gaming and Game Development?

I'm really interested in switching to Linux but I've been overwhelmed by the different distros available. I primarily use my computer for gaming and game development (using Unity), and I also need to work on college documents. My main concerns are compatibility with games, especially Minecraft, Warframe, and Fortnite, as well as support for Microsoft Word for college tasks. My setup has a powerful graphics card (7800xt) and I want to maximize performance at 4K 240Hz. If you have suggestions for a Linux distro that would meet my needs and any thoughts on using alternatives for Word, I'd greatly appreciate it!

You might want to check out the distro selection page on Reddit for tailored suggestions! Linux Mint with Cinnamon is beginner-friendly and has LibreOffice, which supports .docx files. If you're not satisfied with Mint, the website Distrowatch has a ton of options to explore. Just make sure to take regular backups and experiment in a VM first to get comfortable!

Another option could be Nobara or Fedora with KDE. Mint might be a bit outdated for gaming, and while Arch is great, it’s not beginner-friendly. Keep in mind there are other office software, like OpenOffice and LibreOffice if you run into issues with Word.

Honestly, with the apps you plan to use, sticking with Windows might be the best bet for now. However, if you're set on trying Linux, I recommend starting with Linux Mint or Pop OS. Mint works like Windows right out of the box, while Pop OS feels a bit more like macOS. Just keep in mind that Fortnite and the Razer program are tricky on Linux; you might have to look for alternatives. Additionally, for Word documents, LibreOffice and OnlyOffice can cover your needs without too much hassle, unless you’re doing something very complex.

Fortnite can actually work on Linux if you follow some recent tutorials about using Wine. It's definitely doable!

Many games, especially Minecraft and Valve titles, run great on Linux. For Warframe, just adjust your settings and you should be all set. For word processing, LibreOffice is an excellent alternative, and remember to save files in .docx format for compatibility!

If you’re serious about gaming on Linux, I'd advise exploring specifically gaming-focused distros. However, they can be niche, so be ready to troubleshoot a bit. Also, watch out for software that might pose compatibility issues during your game dev sessions—always good to do your research on that stuff before making the switch!
