Hey everyone! I've been experimenting with various Linux distributions and I'm looking to set up a mini PC with Linux. I'm wondering if the specs of my mini PC might limit which distributions and desktop environments run smoothly. Here's what I have:
- Intel N97 processor
- 16GB DDR4 RAM
- 512GB NVME SSD
The distributions I've tested and enjoyed include:
- Mint 22 with Cinnamon
- LMDE 7
- openSUSE with KDE
- PopOS 24.04 LTS
- FerenOS
I'm not too fond of Fedora, Ubuntu, or Arch-based systems (though I found CachyOS to be okay), as Arch makes me a bit anxious. The mini PC will primarily be used for streaming and general browsing, with an occasional retro gaming session if possible. I'd also like to access my OnShape account and use CAD software through the browser. If my old Motorola phone can handle it, I'm hoping my mini PC can too!
Any thoughts or suggestions?

I bet Xfce Mint would run like a dream on your mini PC. Even if you cut the specs in half, it still performs great!
With your specs, you can pretty much run any Linux distro you want. I have a similar system running Fedora KDE and it works well, though keep in mind it won’t be a powerhouse compared to more robust systems with higher-end processors. Just manage your expectations for performance!
Definitely check the system requirements for any applications you'll use! If everything checks out, you should be in good shape.
Linux is super lightweight, so you shouldn't have issues with your specs. 16GB of RAM is plenty for most tasks. Just be aware that some games might not perform as expected due to compatibility issues with certain distros or desktop environments, but you should be good for general use and browsing.
Totally agree! You can also optimize your setup further if you're feeling adventurous. Something like Tiny Core for the bare minimum or Gentoo for more customization can really make a difference, especially if you want to push the limits on performance.
I get that! If you’re used to Windows, the learning curve can feel steep. I recommend checking graphics RAM allocation because VirtualBox limits it quite a bit. But you should be fine with proper setup.
Any Linux distro should be just fine on your mini PC. Most distros only need about 8GB of RAM at most, and since you have 16GB, you're covered! Just remember that running in VirtualBox can give different results because it doesn't utilize your GPU properly.

Absolutely! And if you want a little flair, check out xfce-look.org for themes and tweaks to make it feel more personal.
