I've got a pretty old SFF PC from around 12-13 years ago. Here are the specs: it has an Intel i3 4th gen processor, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD for storage, and Intel HD 4400 graphics. I'm really interested in trying out Linux Mint with the Cinnamon interface, but I've heard it might be too heavy for older machines like mine. What do you all think? Is Cinnamon a good choice or should I consider something lighter?

Cinnamon does let you use GPU acceleration, but not excessively. If you're concerned about performance, consider Xfce or MATE—they're both designed to be lightweight. Try them out and see what feels better for you!
You really think that's a potato? With today's demands, many distros would struggle on systems like yours. Admittedly, I’d call it a potato but that doesn't mean it can't run some Linux flavors!
I've been using Cinnamon on similar specs—just a 4th gen i5 instead of your i3—and it's been good. I would suggest trying both Cinnamon and Xfce. Xfce is known to be lighter, so it might be better for an older machine.
For more help choosing, check out the distro selection guide we have! And remember, take regular backups, try things in a VM, and familiarize yourself with commands before executing them. Stay safe out there!
Cinnamon should run just fine on your PC. It's not super demanding, and you'll likely have a decent experience with it!

With how some modern OSes perform, especially Fedora or Ubuntu, your setup could be considered a potato! But hey, Linux can still breathe some life into it.
