I'm putting together a new PC with an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU and need some help picking the right motherboard. Here's what I'm planning: I'll be using 32GB of DDR5 6000MHz RAM (likely Kingston FURY Beast) and an M.2 NVMe storage option from Samsung or WD. I'm keeping my MSI RTX 3090 Suprim X GPU and NZXT Kraken 360 cooler, all powered by a ROG STRIX 1000W Gold Aura Edition PSU. Aesthetics matter to me, so I'm looking for something in black or white with RGB lighting.
My main question is whether it's worth it to jump to an X870 or X870E motherboard compared to a premium B850, like the ASUS ROG STRIX B850-E GAMING WIFI. What's the real difference in performance and features, and would the higher-end boards genuinely be justified for this build? I'm mostly considering MSI, Gigabyte, and ASUS, so any personal experiences or recommendations would be super helpful!

You don't need to go extra on the chipset. Just get the most affordable motherboard that has the ports you need with decent VRMs for stability.
Chipset branding isn't the only factor for performance. The B850 restricts some features; for instance, it typically supports PCIe 5.0 for just one M.2 slot, while the X870 and X870E mandate it for the GPU and allow for more slots. If you really need those extra features, it might be worth the upgrade; otherwise, stick with B850 if it meets your needs.
Choosing a motherboard based on features is key. For example, I needed 10G Ethernet, so the Asus ProArt was the perfect fit for my build.
Totally get wanting a good motherboard for a higher-end build, but unless you'll actually benefit from X870/E features, save some cash and stick with B850. It's still a solid choice for your setup!
Ultimately, the chipset shouldn't dictate your choice. Focus on the features, aesthetics, and power delivery instead. A good premium board isn't necessary unless you plan on utilizing specific high-end features.
For a build like yours, you wanna aim for a board with solid specs. Look for options like B850-AORUS Elite Rev 1.1 that fit your needs and don’t skimp on quality.

Thanks for the clarification! So would it be safe to say that if I don't need multiple high-speed connections or USB4, B850 is a solid choice?
