I'm planning to use generative AI powered by my 7800XT graphics card and want to switch to Linux mainly for better ROCm support. I'm curious if there's a particular version of Ubuntu that works best for this purpose, or if it doesn't really make a difference?

AMD officially supports Ubuntu 24.04 for ROCm, but you might find it easier to set up in distros that directly package ROCm in their repositories, such as Fedora. It could be worth trying if you want a different experience.

If you're just starting out, installing the standard desktop version with GNOME is a solid choice. If you later want to try different environments, you can easily add them. For instance, to install XFCE (like in Xubuntu), just run `sudo apt install xubuntu-desktop` in the terminal. Enjoy the journey!

You might also want to consider Fedora, especially the Workstation or KDE Plasma editions. Some users say they have better experiences with ROCm on Fedora compared to Ubuntu.

Generally, it doesn’t make too much of a difference which version of Ubuntu you pick—22.04 or 23.10, they’re all just variations in how up-to-date the software is. Just keep in mind that older versions might not support the latest hardware. But if you’re considering different flavors like Kubuntu or Ubuntu MATE, they all share the same base, so it’s more about the desktop environment than anything else.
