I'm having a weird issue with texting my friend. I use an iPhone, and my friend has an Android. However, when I try to text my friend, I end up getting responses from an unknown iPhone user instead. This was apparently because this number may have been previously linked to an Apple account. Does anyone have advice on how to fix this so I can text my friend? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

From my experience, it’s possible that the number is still tied to someone else's Apple account. They may need to reach out to Apple Support to get that sorted out. This was the case a while ago when I worked with customer support for them!
Make sure your friend deregisters iMessage if their number was ever linked to an Apple ID. They can follow the steps at the Apple self-service number deregistration site. That should fix the issue!
You might also want to check if you’re using the right area code when texting. If you’re in different countries, you need to include the international code, like +44 for the UK. Double-checking the number is always a good call!
A simple fix is to remove your friend’s contact and then add it again. Sometimes refreshing the contact can help clear up these issues.
It sounds like that number might have been linked to an Apple ID before, which is causing the confusion. You could try toggling your messages to SMS or RCS mode manually to see if that helps. It's sometimes a hassle, but it could solve the issue!
Yeah, and if that doesn't work, you might want to spam the other Apple account until they log in and unlink it from their Apple ID.

I can vouch for that! I used to work for Apple and this was the best way to resolve it.
