I started my laptop today and went to a different room for about 10 minutes. When I returned, I found that multiple applications were open. Specifically, Microsoft Edge had 3 MSN tabs and one tab for a League of Legends site playing music. I also saw a pop-up for installing VSCode. I have the free version of AVG and Windows Defender, and I ran a malware scan, but it didn't find anything. I'm wondering what could be causing these apps to launch by themselves?

It sounds like your system might have some startup programs set to launch automatically. You can check this in the Task Manager. Just right-click the taskbar, select Task Manager, then go to the Startup tab. From there, you can disable any apps you don't want to start up automatically.
