Why Are My CPU Temps Spiking After the Initial Installation?

I recently upgraded to a 5700x3D and originally had poor temperatures because I left the cooler on with the plastic wrap. After reapplying thermal paste and removing the wrap, my temps improved significantly. However, today my fans started going crazy, and I've noticed a 10°C rise in temperatures. For example, I used to hit 72°C in OCCT, but now I'm at 80°C. In Cinebench, I was at 68°C, the same as when gaming. Everything was fine just yesterday. I've checked the paste application and ensured proper mounting, so I'm puzzled. I'm using an Arctic Freezer 36 with MX-6 paste. What could have caused this spike?

X3D CPUs can run hot. I had a similar experience with my 5700x3D, hitting about 75°C during gaming. I ended up undervolting it in the BIOS using KomboStrike with my MSI Tomahawk board, and now I stay around 55-57°C even with an Arctic Freezer 34 Duo. It might be worth trying undervolting to see if you can lower your temps without any performance loss.

I did try PBO tuning at -30, which helped a bit, but it caused some stuttering in gameplay, so I stopped using it. I’ll think about undervolting since you're seeing such good results!

One thing to consider is your room's ambient temperature. If it's hotter today than it was yesterday, that could affect your CPU's cooling performance. Since heat transfer from the radiator to the air would be less effective in warmer conditions, it's definitely worth checking if the room temperature has changed.

That makes sense. I’ll keep an eye on the ambient temp. It should be cooler soon, so I’ll test it again then!
