Why Are My Games Lagging Even with a High-End Graphics Card?

Hey there! I've been dealing with a frustrating issue with my gaming laptop lately. I have an RTX 4070 and an Intel i7, yet I'm experiencing significant FPS drops and lag when playing new games. This is especially problematic because it sometimes resolves on its own, but it keeps coming back. I've followed countless YouTube tutorials on optimizing my settings, including enabling game mode in Windows, but nothing seems to work.

For instance, I'm playing Hitman WOA, and I notice that my VRAM usage spikes from around 1200MB to over 3000MB or more when I try making minor changes, rendering the game nearly unplayable. To make matters worse, I'm unable to adjust the resolution in the game. This lagging issue often appears after a Windows update or a new Nvidia driver release. I've also tried resetting the graphics settings in the Nvidia app, but the problem persists.

Additionally, I've noticed that when I connect my laptop to a TV or projector, the issues can be inconsistent—for example, despite using a 4K projector, the output only shows 1080p. While I'm not too concerned about that aspect, it adds to my confusion. I'd love to hear any insights or solutions you might have for this issue. Thanks in advance!

What's your laptop model? Make sure to check your device manager for any warning signs next to the video card—it could indicate an issue.

First off, are you playing with your laptop plugged in or running on battery? Performance can really dip if you're not plugged in, which is common for laptops. It’s also worth checking the temps using a tool like HWINFO—if the temperatures are hitting 100% consistently, you might be thermal throttling. That could be causing the lag, especially during gaming. You can also run benchmark tests like Cinebench to see how your performance compares to expectations for your specs.

Thanks for the tips! I'll try running those checks.

Honestly, I think the hardware is fine—most of the lag issues seem to stem from the Windows OS itself. It's notorious for random freezing and crashing during games. You might want to look into possible fixes related to Windows updates or drivers.

I get your point, but many users run Windows fine without these issues. What are your concrete solutions then?

Sounds like you’re overlooking a lot of successful gaming setups on Windows!

Have you checked if your laptop has a hybrid mode or a mux switch? If so, try forcing it to only use the dedicated graphics card. Also, make sure you’re always plugged in while playing to maximize performance.
